I developed my first training course in 1998 when my children were in high school.
At that time, the Board of Education issued a policy stipulating all students must pass the High School Exit Exam to receive their diploma. Otherwise, they would receive a document stating their attendance.
You can imagine the frustration. After attending four years of high school, students could walk away with a record of attendance instead of a high school diploma. Think about it; many senior students have already been accepted to college with full academic scholarships. Moreover, athletic students also received scholarships.
Instead of joining the crowd of frustration, I contacted the Board of Education to see what I could do about the exam. The contact mentioned a document that included sample questions for all testing sections (English, Reading, Math, and Social Studies). I purchased a copy.
I reviewed the document and designed a study course for my children and their friends. I met with them on Saturdays for 4-6 weeks. I coached and mentored them on each subject and gave them a copy of the sample tests. I graded each test and revisited areas that needed more review. My children and 20 of their friends passed the High School Exit Exam on the first attempt. Three other students passed two sections but still needed help on the other two. They passed on the 2nd try.
The word rang out in the community where I worked with students to pass the exit exam. I opened my first small business, "Good Information," and began coaching and mentoring high school students to pass their Exit exams. Everything pretty much evolved from there.
Now, I help industry experts become online adjuncts, develop university online courses, and teach engaging online courses.
